Texas Hospital Live Tweets Kidney Transplant

As more and more hospitals hop on the social media bandwagon, operating rooms have transformed into open learning forums used to educate fellow doctors, patients and the public about procedures in real-time.

It’s certainly not the first time a hospital and medical team have used popular microblogging site Twitter to send 140 character tweets during an operation. However, USA Today’s Technology Live blog reports that it is the first time a hospital has tweeted a pediatric kidney transplant surgery.

The surgery centers around 3-year-old John Gilbreath receiving a kidney from his father, Chris Gilbreath at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and is intended to raise awareness about living donations.

You can follow the live-tweeting by hopping over to @ChildrensTheOne where members of @UTSWNews are using the channel to provide updates.

Here’s wishing the best to a successful surgery and speedy recovery for John and Chris!
