The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in conjunction with Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for registering the most people as organ donors in a single day (eight hours) on Sunday, August 26. The current world record is 765 registrations. We hope to make history and save lives by doubling or even tripling this mark!
This lifesaving campaign is a collaborative effort being spearheaded by Campus Recreation and the University Police Department. Staff members within both of these departments have been personally touched by donation. Robyn Deterding, Illinois’ Director of Campus Recreation, knows all too well about the importance of organ and tissue donation. When she lost her son, Teddy, 12 years ago in a tragic accident, Deterding and her family were able to provide hope and life to others through donation.
“Organ and tissue donation gave my family a bright light at a very dark time,” Deterding said. “I challenge all University of Illinois students, faculty and alumni to help save lives by registering as organ and tissue donors on August 26th. Let’s show the world that the University of Illinois believes in the power of organ and tissue donation and is committed to transforming lives, not only inside the classroom, but outside of the classroom, as well.”
University of Illinois students and staff can be part of this record-setting effort by registering as an organ donor at Gift of Hope’s registration booths at Quad Day from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and at the Taste of Nevada from 4 – 7 p.m. But, if you are not on campus, you can still be a part of the Illinois community of organ and tissue donors by registering or reaffirming your decision to save lives at www.IlliniforHope.org.
Help us save lives and break the world record by REGISTERING or REAFFIRMING your decision to be and organ and tissue donor at www.IlliniforHope.org. Or, if you are on campus, stop by our booth on August 26th!
