Your Friend, Morgan D’Organ

Morgan D’Organ, the Donate Life Illinois mascot, is traveling across America to bring the lifesaving message of organ and tissue donation to people’s front doors. He will be at fairs, festivals, sporting events, concerts, etc. If there’s an event for Morgan to promote donation and get people to register as organ and tissue donors, he will find it!

Morgan and his team of donation experts.

Throughout the summer, you can track Morgan on both Facebook and Twitter. For a complete list of events Morgan is attending, go to the Donate Life Illinois Facebook Page and click on the “Morgan’s Mission” tab.

Morgan also will take over the Donate Life Illinois Twitter account (@DonateLifeIL) to share updates from the road. Check the hashtag #MorgansFeat to find updates and photos of Morgan’s expeditions. Although Morgan is sporting some pretty awesome kicks these days, the pictures won’t just be of Morgan’s toes. (We’re talking “feat” here, folks, not “feet.”) They will feature Morgan LIVE and in
action as he tries to accomplish an AMAZING FEAT!

The one and only Mini Morgan in Denver learning about organ and tissue donation.

What is this amazing feat? Morgan wants to help register 100 million Americans as organ and tissue donors by the end of 2011. Currently, more than 94 million Americans already have made the decision to give life through organ and tissue donation. Morgan wants to get 6 million more in just six months!

You can help Morgan achieve his goal by registering your decision to be an organ and tissue donor at DonateLifeIllinois.org. You also can help by fanning Donate Life Illinois on Facebook or following on Twitter.

Donate Life Month Wrap-Up

May 4, 2011

April has ended, and May is officially here. We can now look forward to warm weather, kids coming home from school, days at the beach and all sorts of summer fun. But, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s be sure to reflect on an extremely successful National Donate Life Month.

There were hundreds of events and news stories surrounding donation throughout April, which led to a HUGE boost in donor registrations. Here, in no particular order, are four of our favorites from the past month.

1. 30 Reasons You Should Register as an Organ Donor Blog

Scott's driver's license showing that he is a registered donor.

Scott Meis, a good friend of Donate Life Illinois, documented 30 reasons why you should register as an organ and tissue donor. Each day throughout the month of April, Scott gave a new reason to register. His reasons to register ranged from sharing donor family and recipient stories to his #1 reason you should register—Duh.

Scott’s blog is an amazing compilation of donation stories and information. We encourage you to take a few moments to read 30
Reasons You Should Register as an Organ
 at Scott’s blog.

2. Charles Tillman and Paco Rodriguez

Organ and tissue donation leaped into the national headlines on Tuesday, April 19. Two nationally syndicated television shows prominently featured heartfelt organ and tissue donation stories.

Jackie Tillman, daughter and heart transplant recipient Tiana and Charles.

In the morning, The Oprah Winfrey Show featured the family of Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman and their story of life and donation. Tiana Tillman, Charles’ daughter, needed  a lifesaving heart transplant as a baby, and she was fortunate enough to receive the gift of life from a selfless donor. Oprah highlighted the Tillman family’s story and then introduced them to their donor family. You can view the video here.

Later that afternoon, the ESPN program E:60 told the story of Chicago boxer Francisco “Paco” Rodriguez and his family’s decision to donate life after a fatal bout in Philadelphia. The story is available on ESPN.com here.

3. Gift of Hope Hospital Campaign

Morgan D'Organ joins Wendy, Nichole and Ryan at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago

Throughout April, the Hospital Development staff at Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network worked closely with hospitals throughout Illinois and northwest Indiana to build donation awareness and register hospital staff and guests as organ and tissue donors. The Hospital Development staff held tons of events and registered hundreds of individuals as organ and tissue donors. Their efforts ranged from staffing donor registration tables to hosting educational panels featuring Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

Steve Ferkau and Anna Davlantes at Lifesaving Partners.

The Hospital Development staff also hosted the annual Lifesaving Partners Awards event with Fox Chicago News anchor Anna Davlantes as emcee and double-lung recipient Steve Ferkau as featured speaker.

4. Commercial Featuring Mikahla Thornton and Brittney Payton

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office produced a commercial featuring heart recipient Mikahla Thornton and Brittney Payton, daughter of the late Chicago Bears legend. The commercial aired throughout Illinois and encouraged viewers to register their decision to be organ and tissue donors.

Thanks to all of you who made an effort to promote organ and tissue donation throughout National Donate Life Month. No effort was too small in April, whether it was a tweet to friends encouraging them to register or an event that drew thousands. If you haven’t done so already, take 30 seconds to register your decision to be an organ and tissue donor at DonateLifeIllinois.org!

Morgan’s Halloween Night Out

November 2, 2009

Superman Morgan

Thanks to everyone who voted this year to help me pick my Halloween costume! I didn’t think I could out do my awesome pirate costume from last year, but man did you guys come through for me!

I’ve always considered it a privilege to represent the incredible men and women of Illinois who help save countless lives each and every day with organ/tissue donation, but I’d never go so far as to call myself a superhero; I’d reserve that for those who give the gift of life. Nonetheless, the organ donation community made their voices heard and this year I came out strong and donned a red cape, blue boots and a yellow underwear thingy to be THE hero of all heroes…SUPERMAN!

I somehow managed to overbook myself for the evening (I’m a popular guy, what can I say?) so having the power to fly around the state for the night definitely made things a whole lot easier. As I flew around Illinois, I got to see all the great costumes you guys put together and wow was I impressed!

Another great thing about being Superman for the night was that after eating all that yummy Halloween candy (and let me tell you, a liver sure can eat), I was able to take a quick jog around the state and whew, did I feel as fit as ever.

But of course, aside from having an awesome time and showing off my super cool costume, I wanted to make sure I got out and spread the word about the importance of organ/tissue donation. I met some wonderful people who wanted to learn more about what it takes to become an organ donor and they were so eager to register, it was incredible!

I had just a great time, and thanks again for helping pick out such a cool costume for me. And remember, you don’t need a cape to help
save a life! Register to be an organ/tissue donor today.

Morgan D’ Organ Needs Your Halloween Costume Help

October 26, 2009

A message from Morgan:

Morgan D' Organ

Morgan D' Organ

It’s that time of year again.

Yup, every October, people like to laugh and giggle and make fun of the big pink guy rolling around town. I guess some people just assume that I am some Halloween fanatic that celebrates year-round. Wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I love Halloween, but there’s no denying that I am in fact a giant liver that most enjoys promoting organ and tissue donation all the time.

So, once a year, I get the chance to put a twist on my usual good looks and draw some fresh eyes with a costume. The problem is that I can never quite decide which route to take. I’ve always got ideas but can never quite pick the right outfit.

That’s where YOU come in. We’ve got one week until the big dress up day and I need some serious help. Take a look below and let me know what you think about my options. Last year, all signs pointed toward me being a pirate. I definitely enjoyed saying “arrrgghhh” a lot but let’s be honest – I’m quite the gentle giant.

The polls will close this Thursday, October 29 with the results revealed Friday, October 30, just in time for the big day. Feel free to pass this post around for your friends and coworkers to vote as well and I’ll be sure to share some photos from my night on the town.
