Show Some Love for Organ and Tissue Donation

February 14, 2012

Supporters of organ and tissue donation are some of the most passionate and energetic advocates around. This Valentine’s Day, let’s focus that passion and energy on “showing some love for organ and tissue donation.” How can we show our love for donation? It’s simple . . . just follow these steps:

  1. If you haven’t done so already, take 30 seconds to register your decision to save lives through organ/tissue donation at DonateLifeIllinois.org.
  2. Let others know that you’re a registered donor! Tweet and post about why you support organ/tissue donation. Not a social media fan? No problem! Tell ten co-workers, friends, or family members about why you support organ/tissue donation and why they should register at DonateLifeIllinois.org.
  3. Become a Donate Life Illinois volunteer. Learn more about the Donate Life Illinois Volunteer Program at DonateLifeIllinois.org!
  4. Advocate for organ/tissue donation in the community and in your workplace. Encourage your employer to participate in the Donate Life Illinois Workplace Partners Campaign. Or, if you’re still in school, organize a Campus Campaign that will encourage your fellow students to register as organ/tissue donors!

Thanks for all of your love! Let us know how you “showed your love for donation” by posting on the Donate Life Illinois Facebook Page or tweet at us @DonateLifeIL!

campuschallenge09After week three of the 2009 Donate Life Illinois Campus Challenge, Kankakee Community College holds on to the top spot with Eastern Illinois University still following in second. U of I and WIU are neck and neck for the third slot.

We were also thrilled to hear that Columbia student Bill Coon received his heart and kidney transplants this past week! Bill’s sister, Carissa, has been highly involved in EIU’s Challenge efforts. Check out this past blog post for a complete update and keep an eye out for a follow-up video featuring Carissa and Bill.

The Challenge was also recently covered in this great article from the College of DuPage’s student paper, the Courier. The Journal-Courier also did a nice article about MacMurray College’s efforts.

We’ll keep you posted with another Challenge update next week.

campuschallenge09The 2009 Donate Life Illinois Campus Challenge continues to steamroll ahead! Kankakee Community College has jumped into the lead with Eastern Illinois University currently in second place.

Some nice media stories are also continuing to help spread the word on the Challenge. Last week, the Champaign News-Gazette did a nice follow up story about UIUC’s involvement as did the Daily Illini. EIU’s Daily Eastern News also did a great editorial supporting the issue as did Loyola University’s Phoenix editorial board.

Currently, 354 students have registered as part of the Challenge. Keep your eyes peeled as we have some more exciting Challenge outreach initiatives coming up in the weeks ahead.

Getting Ready for the 2009 Campus Challenge!

September 21, 2009

campuschallenge09Let the countdown begin!

Each fall, Donate Life Illinois works with students and student groups from colleges and universities across Illinois as part of our six week Donate Life Illinois Campus Challenge. This year’s Challenge will take place October 5November 13.

During this time, students will be hosting registration drives on campus as well as reaching out online to encourage fellow students, faculty, staff and alumni to sign up and help save lives. In the spirit of friendly competition, the school with the most registrations and the school that registers the largest percentage of its student population will be deemed the winners.

We’re incredibly excited about the bundle of schools and groups that have already signed on to participate. We’ll be pulling together a lot in the next few weeks before the big launch day and will keep everyone updated throughout.

You can check out our official 2009 Campus Challenge Facebook group over here – http://budurl.com/FBGroup09. It’s from this main group that we also provide links to each school’s individual Facebook group for the Challenge.

If you or someone you know would like to get involved with this year’s Challenge, drop us a line at donatelifeillinois@gmail.com.

April is National Donate Life Month!

April 1, 2009

The big day has arrived!  National Donate Life Month is upon us!

On the national level, there is of course lots of great activity already in motion. I’d encourage you to check out the recently launched 2009 National Donation Campus Challenge, spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Health Resources & Services Administration. The effort will work to engage as many colleges as possible through the fall in registration outreach to students.

In addition, Donate Life America has started a Flags Across America initiative where hospitals nationwide will be flying Donate Life flags each time a donation occurs to honor those that have given the gift of life.

As previously posted, Donate Life Illinois has created this “I Heart Organ Donors” video to encourage anyone and everyone that is supportive of the issue to post a video response or comment. We also started up this Facebook group to help call attention to the issue during April (join the group and stay tuned for more info on our planned Donate Life Facebook profile photo/status update day on April 17!) .

Secretary of State Jesse White is also unveiling his annual TV/radio commerical today at a press conference at University of Illinois at Chicago. We hope to have a recap on that and share the commercial soon.

Last, we wanted to share a very important National Donate Life Month message from Dave Bosch, director of communications at Gift of Hope. If you want to find out how you can help in any capacity, drop us a comment, we’ve got plenty of opportunities to spread the word!

Here’s to another busy, busy month promoting organ donation!
